Back in June 1987, the Australian government gave the green light for the production of platinum coins for the very first time. Struck by the Perth Mint, these became Australia’s first platinum bullion coins and made their debut in September 1988 with the Australian Platinum Koala. Fast forward to 2023, and we’re celebrating the 35th anniversary of this historic release with the modern Platinum Koala from the Perth Mint. Obverse

On the obverse of the 2023 Australian Platinum Koala Coin, you’ll find the memorial bust of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile bust was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint and includes the George IV State Diadem. This bust represents the sixth and final effigy of the Queen to grace Australian coins.

Reverse

The reverse design field of the 2023 1 oz Platinum Koala Coins includes Michael Tracey’s 1988 depiction of the koala, which was used on the first-ever Platinum Koala coin. In this design, the koala is captured in front-facing relief as it is seated on all four legs. This side of the coin also includes the unique P35 mint mark, which pays tribute to the 35th anniversary of the series.

History
